600 lb Black Bear & my Brother

100_3778bear1My brother sent me this picture of a 600 lb Black Bear pulled from under a porch.  He was tagged and relocated but as bears are territorial, he may be back.  He was found with a bag of garbage – bear take out.  Steven works for the Dept. of Fish and Game in New Jersey.

WWAY Visited the Shop today to interview Joe about a recent computer threat.   It was a fun day!

Unfortunately we thought the news was still a bit confusing – so here’s the story again:

Update your computer with Microsoft updates to keep from being infected with the latest Worm “Downandup”, “Down ad up” and “Conficker”.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/bulletins/200901.mspx to download the needed fix for your computer.

Follow these safety tips we have shared with you before:

.  Keep your Microsoft Downloads updated.

.  Use a Good Antivirus Program

.  Don’t click on links from unknown sources

.  Stay off High Risk Sites.

The patch for this worm has been available from Microsoft for some time.  The rapid rate at which it is growing demonstrates the need for consumers to take more control of security features available to them.

Secret Santa

More and More Santas Every Year.

It’s always disappointing when children lose the magic of Santa, but we found a great way to keep the magic alive in our family.

When you are absolutely sure older children have figured it all out, it’s time to let them into the Santa Club.

Now that they are mature, they get to actually BE Santa.  This is the perfect time of year to prepare a special package for them and have a serious talk.  In the package add things like a Santa hat, a bell, a flashlight and some cash.

Now they get to watch the members of the family closely for ideas of items that go in the stocking.  They can’t tell anyone what they have done, that is part of the fun.  And they get to sneak into the living room,  with their handy flashlight and special hat, on Christmas eve to put special secret gifts out for family members.

A few secret winks and nods this time of year have older siblings considering the secret fun club of givers, additions to Santa’s elf force.  And isn’t it really all about giving anyway?

Holiday Check list

A new kind of Holiday Check List

 1.  Rechargeable batteries generally need 12 good hours of charge before using them.  This helps increase the lifespan of the battery.  So if you are giving a gift like a laptop, phone or an iPod this year, why not charge it up for the receipient before giving it?  That way they can get right to the fun of the gift without waiting or compromising the long term battery life.

2.  Know someone giving a computer gift to a young believer this year?  Why not put a special background on it to make it even more magical.  Check the previous section for some fun holiday screen savers and background shots to make that gadget really seem like it came from the North Pole.  (Same for cell phones, why not download and set a custom ring w/Jingle Bells?)

 3.  Triple check the accessories, batteries, cables, converters & such.  This is especially true if you are buying one device as an add on to another.  Cameras + PCs, Games + computers/TVs, Printers to computers.

Testimonials

I wanted to write a brief testimonial for you/your business when I got home today but I wasn't sure where to do that on your site so I trust that I just need to send you one here, in email and you'll post it to the site? Testimonial: I popped into "Your Computer Friends" today without much hope of having my wee little computer problem solved but Susan took care of it in about 3 minutes flat. It was a simple enough problem but one I couldn't take care of on my own; I had a file on an antiquated hard floppy that I wanted access to. Susan took care of the issue quickly and efficiently and had me out on the door and on my way in no time. The lesson I learned (besides having a little more patience)? That there is room in our world for both new and outdated technology and that experts like Susan are a great resource. I will definitely think of her again should I have pricklier computer problems and would recommend her services without hesitation. Thanks again Susan -- I appreciate your help.
